Veterinary Innovation

The Clinical Translation Platform of the Animal Health Partners Research Chair in Veterinary Medical Innovation

Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Translation Platform as part of the Animal Health Partners Research Chair in Veterinary Medical Innovation. The Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph is an internationally renowned college of veterinary medicine with a proven track record in comprehensive research.

Veterinary clinical patients experience many of the same diseases in the same environments as humans. Veterinary clinical trials have significant potential to improve the evaluation of techniques and devices prior to introduction to the human market. By studying novel technologies, devices and interventions in this patient population, we can better understand and refine protocols prior to introduction into human clinical trials; resulting in improved access for veterinary patients and improved outcomes for humans.

Objectives of the Platform

The purpose of this platform is to support health science advancement through innovation. Projects will focus on innovation and may involve novel technology, devices or interventions that have a high probability of success. This platform focuses on projects that can be evaluated in a veterinary clinical trials setting. Proposals will be evaluated for their relevance, innovation, translational and impact potential.

What We Offer

We work with researchers and private industry to evaluate the veterinary market for novel technology, devices or interventions with potential for translation into the human market. During the initial exploration phase we will meet with you to understand your goals and provide insight into the potential market. Next we will help to develop plans to ensure all preliminary safety and ethical requirements are completed prior to a clinical trial. Following completion of phases 1 and 2, we will help to develop and carry out a veterinary clinical trial at the Ontario Veterinary College, Toronto Animal Health Partners or at one of our partner sites throughout Canada. Finally, through our connections and existing collaborations we will provide insight and support for the translation of this idea for the next phase of development.  Please note this program is not intended as a funding mechanism.

Why Work With Us?

Our team has the distinct advantage of a rigorous academic environment that upholds the highest level of research integrity with a focus on evidence-based medicine.  We have access to a large veterinary patient population and have extensive expertise in developing veterinary clinical trials. We work closely with industry and human healthcare partners to ensure all work performed is relevant and applicable across the disciplines and can provide support and consultation during the regulatory process. While we are based at the University of Guelph, we have partners throughout Canada and can work with you to determine the best plan and location for your study.

How to Work With Us?

If you have novel technology, device or intervention that you would like to evaluate in a veterinary population or naturally-occurring disease model, please Contact Us to learn more or Submit a Project for consideration. Once you submit the Executive Screening documentation, we will meet with you, either in person or virtually to further discuss your ideas and determine whether it fits the mandate of the Clinical Translation Platform. If accepted, you will complete an RFP which will be reviewed by our Scientific Advisory Panel. Our goal is to help you successfully proceed through this process and we will work closely with you every step of the way.
